Getting Started
What is PostMortem?
PostMortem is a digital legacy platform that lets you securely prepare and deliver encrypted messages, files, and important information to your loved ones. Your messages are automatically delivered to designated recipients if you stop checking in.
How does the check-in system work?
You set a check-in interval (from 1 hour to 1 year). If you don't click "Check In" within that timeframe, your message boxes are automatically delivered to your designated recipients. Each check-in resets the timer.
What can I include in a message box?
Message boxes can contain text messages, login credentials (usernames and passwords), files (photos, videos, documents), and financial information like debts or account details.
Do I need technical knowledge to use PostMortem?
No. PostMortem is designed to be simple. Just create a message box, add your content, set your check-in interval, and designate recipients. The encryption happens automatically.
Security & Encryption
How is my data encrypted?
All message content is encrypted on your device using AES-256 encryption before being uploaded. Your encryption key is generated locally and never sent to our servers. We cannot access or decrypt your messages.
What happens if I lose my encryption key?
Your message content cannot be recovered without your encryption key. This is why we provide a downloadable key card with a QR code that you should store securely (printed copy, safe deposit box, etc.).
Can PostMortem staff read my messages?
No. Your messages are encrypted on your device before upload. We only store encrypted data and do not have access to your encryption key. Only you and your designated recipients (with their access keys) can decrypt the content.
How do recipients decrypt messages?
Each recipient receives a personalized access key card. When your messages are delivered, they use their access key to authenticate and decrypt the content.
Message Boxes & Delivery
Can I edit a message box after creating it?
Yes, you can edit any message box until it has been delivered. Once delivered, the content cannot be changed.
Can different recipients receive different messages?
You can create multiple message boxes with different content and recipients. Each box delivers its contents to all recipients assigned to that specific box.
What triggers message delivery?
Messages are delivered when you miss a check-in deadline. If your check-in interval is 7 days and you do not click "Check In" within 7 days, your message boxes will be sent to recipients.
Can I cancel a scheduled delivery?
Yes. Simply click "Check In" to reset the timer, or delete the message box if you no longer want it delivered.
Recipients & Contacts
Do recipients need to create an account?
No. Recipients only need the access key from the key card you provide them. They can view delivered messages through a secure web portal without signing up.
How do I share access keys with recipients?
When you add a recipient, you can download a personalized key card (PDF) containing their access key as a QR code. Share this card with them securely - in person, via secure messaging, or in a sealed envelope.
Can I add or remove recipients from a message box?
Yes, you can modify recipients on any undelivered message box. Removing a recipient revokes their access to that specific box.
Account & Privacy
How do I delete my account?
You can request account deletion through the app settings or via our account deletion page. All your data, including message boxes and contacts, will be permanently removed within 30-45 days.
Is PostMortem GDPR compliant?
Yes. We comply with GDPR and support your data rights including access, correction, deletion, and export. Contact support to exercise these rights.
What data does PostMortem collect?
We collect account information (name, email), encrypted message content, recipient details, and usage data for service improvement. Message content is encrypted and inaccessible to us. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Technical
What devices and browsers are supported?
The web app works on all modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). Mobile apps are available for iOS and Android.
Is there an offline mode?
Message creation and check-ins require an internet connection. However, your encryption key is stored locally and remains accessible offline.
What happens if PostMortem shuts down?
Your encrypted data remains yours. We recommend keeping a backup of your encryption key card. In the unlikely event of service discontinuation, we would provide advance notice and data export options.
